Branding: Beard Products
Project type
Branding: Beard Products
Date
September 2024
Location
Marin County, CA
Objective:
Modernize an old design with updated typography and imagery.
Design Concept:
This student project, titled Type Hunting, tasked us with finding older products that were no longer made and reimagine the design into a different product. I chose Hollywood Boot Polish because it reminded me of Kiwi Shoe Polish, which I used with my dad. I especially like the "W" in Hollywood. Rather than creating another shoe polish product, I designed beard products. I specifically chose to design a Beard Balm and Bear Butter. I named the product Beechwood as an homage to the original product name and to appeal to the target consumer, adult males.
Using Illustrator, I created a lumberjack face with sharp lines and a shadowed face, similar to the original product design. I then created crossed axes to balance the main design. After creating the balm in a tin can that emulated the boot polish, I then designed a bear butter in a tube. This allowed me to highlight the portability of the branding design across multiple products.
Color Theory:
I closely matched the original product but cleaned it up to modernize the design. For the beard butter, I kept the gold for consistency in branding then switched to a lime green to indicate a scent change, making it more identifiable.
Typography: Using the WhatTheFont website to try to find the fonts. I didn't find an exact match for the Hollywood font, but Crow Beak had a modernized version that I liked. The other fonts were easier to identify, and I chose Geometos Soft Ultra for the secondary font.
Overview:
This was a fun project that allowed me to showcase my skills in design for branding products. I especially like branding and creating a cohesive design that can span multiple products.
